AFS Assists with Emerging Area Source Rules
AFS and its Environmental, Health & Safety Air Quality Committee (10-E) established a Task Force for the Area Source Rules for aluminum, copper-base and other nonferrous metalcasters currently under development by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This task force, which is comprised of representatives from metalcasting facilities, environmental consultants and industry associations, is charged with working with EPA during the rulemaking process to ensure the agency understands the concerns of the metalcasting industry and the affect increased environmental control will have on casting manufacturers.

As part of its Urban Air Toxics Strategy under the Clean Air Act and a consent decree with the Sierra Club, EPA is required to promulgate new air emissions standards for smaller or area sources of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from copper, nonferrous and aluminum foundries by June 15, 2009. For each of the area source categories, EPA must develop standards based on generally available control technology (GACT) used to reduce emissions of HAPs. GACT may be in the form of pollution control devices or best management practices.

To ensure an industry-wide collation during the rulemaking, AFS has joined forces with the Non-Ferrous Founders' Society (NFFS) and its task force, and these groups will work together with U.S. EPA during the rulemaking process. Similar to the rule published for iron and steel metalcasters this year, the nonferrous rule has the potential to significantly impact nonferrous operations. The first step by AFS and NFFS will be a joint mailing to all nonferrous metalcasters in the U.S. to alert them to the rulemaking.

Seminar Brings Together Metalcasters, Buyers and Designers
The AFS Metalcasting Solutions seminar will be held April 24 at the Hilton Garden Inn-Chicago O'Hare Airport, Des Plaines, Ill. The focus of this seminar is to bring together metalcasters with casting buyers and designers to discuss the casting processes, review the various alloy families, see casting design successes and learn about technological advancements in metalcasting. If you are a buyer, attend this workshop to learn more about what metalcasting can do for you. If you are a metalcaster, show buyers your capabilities.

Gating and Riser Design Internet Course Coming
CMI will be offering a Gating and Riser Design internet course May 26-June 29. This online course is applicable to both horizontally and vertically parted molds and will cover methods for gating and risering iron, steel, aluminum, magnesium and copper-base alloys. Special methods for ductile iron will be included.

For more information, or to attend this course, contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237, or click here to register.

CMI Offers Practical Green Sand Control Course
CMI will be offering a Practical Green Sand Control - Ferrous course June 3-6 at the Univ. of Wisconsin/Platteville, Platteville, Wis. This course covers the basic components of a green sand system, such as mixing and mulling, sand compaction methods and controlling a green sand system. Additionally, sand test results, what tests to run, testing frequency and casting defects will be discussed. All ferrous alloys will be covered, and a valuable hands-on lab session will reinforce the lecture portion of the course.
