AFS Research Helps Produce $10.1 Million Grant, Lightweight Solutions
With the help of AFS research, a team led by the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM), Madison, Wis., has procured a five-year, $10.1 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The grant is intended to help UWM take cast aluminum and magnesium nanocomposites from the laboratory to large-scale production. AFS provided UWM the research funds necessary to initiate the seed project that helped prove the viability of the technology.

Two new research reports have been released to augment your metalcasting library. New titles include Mechanical, Physical and Fatigue Data for 25% High Chromium White Iron and Mechanical, Physical and Fatigue Data for ASTM A897/A897M-06 Grade 110/70/11 and 750/500/11 Austempered Ductile Iron.

Twin Cities Chapter Meeting:
Plan for Cap and Trade, Natural Gas Risks

The AFS Twin Cities Chapter recently hosted a meeting focusing on cap and trade legislation and natural gas risks in metalcasting facilities. Featured speakers at the event, held Jan. 12 at the Green Mill, Shoreview, Minn., included Doug Allen and Beau Griffey from U.S. Energy Services, who gave a presentation titled “Natural Gas, Power, and Carbon Management.”

Program for World Foundry Congress in China Released
The Foundry Institution of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society has released the program for the 69th World Foundry Congress, to be held in Hangzhou, China, Oct, 16-20. According to the program, the five day congress will include meetings of the World Foundrymen Organization, technical, plenary and poster sessions, business tours, and an exhibition floor.

CMI Delivers Introduction to Metalcasting Tutorial CD
New for 2010, the Cast Metals Institute has released an updated version of its Introduction to Metalcasting Tutorial CD. Through the use of interaction, video, text and quizzes with printable scores, the user will learn the process of making a metal casting from start to finish. Compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems, the tutorial helps take a new employee from “what’s that?” to “now I know.”

EPA Releases Stringent Ozone Proposal
The Environmental Protection Agency issued a proposal in January for a more stringent primary National Ambient Air Quality Standard to protect human health, as well as a more stringent secondary standard to protect the environment. If adopted, the proposed rule would increase the number of non-attainment areas that will require reductions in emission standards and require offsets in order to develop new sources and continued focus on reducing automotive emissions.

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Ark.), ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is working to block the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ruling that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare.
