Research Foundation Ensures the Future
of Metalcasting

AFS announces the establishment of the Metalcasting Research Foundation. The goal of this foundation is to fund metalcasting research and technology development and to provide its members a competitive edge in the marketplace. The first solicitation for donations was sent to AFS Corporate Members in October.

AFS has issued a call for papers to be presented at the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) 2010 RAPID tradeshow. The event will be held May 18-20, 2010, at the Disneyland Hotel, Anaheim, Calif., and will include a metalcasting technology track.

Metalcasting Facilities Likely To Receive Free Allowances in EU Emissions Trading System
On Nov. 4 a group of lawmakers in the European Parliament's Environment Committee failed to block a European Commission proposal that would give most of the European Union's heavy manufacturing industry–including iron and aluminum metalcasting facilities–special protection in case of carbon leakage.

Senate Cap-and-Trade Bill Approved
Despite the boycott and protest of Republicans, Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Democrats led by Chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA) approved the Senate cap-and-trade bill (S. 1733) on Thursday by a 10-1 vote.
