AFS Research Helps
Produce $10 Million Grant, Lightweight Solutions
With the help of
American Foundry Society (AFS) research, the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM),
Madison, Wis., has procured a five year, $10.1 million grant from the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The grant has been issued to take
cast aluminum and magnesium nanocomposites from laboratory to large-scale
production. AFS helped UWM by providing the research funds necessary to initiate
the seed project that help to prove the viability of the technology
concept.

AFS to Find Lightweight Casting
Solutions, Create Jobs
AFS is currently soliciting white papers for
evaluation and funding consideration for a new Advanced Lightweight Casting
Solutions (ALCS) for Defense Applications program. White papers are being
considered in three broad categories including metalcasting process improvement
and advancement, process modeling and simulation improvements and cast material
improvements, with a focus on efforts to reduce component weight.

Another Stimulus Bill
In Dec., the
U.S. House of Representatives approved the Jobs for Main
Street Act of 2010 (H.R. 2847). Intended to stimulate job growth, the
measure includes about $50 billion for public works projects along with almost
$50 billion for cash-strapped state and local governments.
